It Impressions: A Playful Handwritten Font That Brings Personality to Branding

Opening the Project: A Blank Canvas and a Need for Character

I was staring at a blank brand board the other day, trying to find the right tone for a new client—a small, locally-owned café that wanted a fresh visual identity. They wanted something warm, approachable, and just a little whimsical. I knew right away that a clean sans serif wouldn’t cut it. I needed something with soul. That’s when I remembered It Impressions, a modern handwritten font I’d downloaded from a freebies site a few weeks prior.

I opened up my design software, pulled up the logo mockup, and typed out the café’s name in It Impressions. Instantly, the design felt more human. The letters had bounce, energy, and a kind of casual elegance that made the whole thing feel like it was handwritten just for that shop.

What Is It Impressions?

It Impressions is a playful handwritten font that feels modern yet organic. It has the charm of a personal note but the polish of a professional design asset. The letterforms are slightly bouncy, with subtle swashes and ligatures that give it a dynamic flow. It’s PUA encoded, which means you can access all the alternate characters and flourishes without needing special software—just open the Glyphs panel and start experimenting.

It’s not a font for long paragraphs or body text. Instead, It Impressions shines as a display font—perfect for logos, headlines, product labels, and social media graphics where you want to inject some personality and warmth.

Testing It Out: From Logo to Packaging

With the logo draft in place, I moved on to the packaging. I dropped It Impressions into the mockup for coffee bags and menu cards. The font’s soft curves and uneven baseline gave the design a handcrafted feel, which aligned perfectly with the café’s artisanal vibe.

I especially liked how it looked on small labels. The font retained its charm even at smaller sizes, though I made sure not to go below 12pt when using it for product tags. It’s important to remember that while It Impressions is highly readable for a script font, it still works best in short-form text.

When I moved to digital assets—like the homepage hero section and Instagram stories—I found that pairing It Impressions with a clean sans serif font like Montserrat or Lato helped balance the layout. The contrast between the playful headline and the structured body text created a strong visual hierarchy.

Font Pairing Tips

Here’s what worked best for me:

This combination gave the brand system a layered, cohesive feel without looking cluttered or mismatched. If you're using It Impressions in a client project, always test the pairings in context—on mockups, print samples, and screen previews—to see how they work together in real life.

Designing Across Mediums: From Business Cards to Web Headers

One of the joys of working with It Impressions was seeing how it translated across different mediums. On business cards, it felt personal and memorable. On printed posters, it added a touch of whimsy that made the café stand out. For the website, I used it sparingly in headers and callout sections, always making sure it didn’t interfere with readability or load times.

I also tested it on a few merchandise mockups—think mugs, tote bags, and greeting cards. It held up well in all of them, especially when used as a short tagline or accent text. The key was keeping the font size large enough and ensuring it didn’t compete with other design elements.

For digital use, I checked the file formats included with It Impressions. It came in both OTF and TTF, which covered all my design tools—Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, and Canva. I also appreciated that it was PUA encoded, which allowed me to use the alternate glyphs without any extra plugins.

What to Watch For

Like any script font, It Impressions has its limitations. It’s not ideal for:

Also, while it’s free for commercial use, I always double-check the licensing terms—especially when delivering design files to clients. In this case, the font’s license allowed for use in commercial projects, which made it a safe and budget-friendly choice.

Final Thoughts: A Font That Feels Like a Signature

By the end of the project, I realized that It Impressions had become more than just a font—it was the visual signature of the brand. It gave the café’s identity a sense of warmth, authenticity, and creativity that resonated with their target audience.

If you’re a designer working on a branding project for a boutique, handmade shop, or local business, I’d highly recommend giving It Impressions a try. It’s a versatile, accessible font that brings a human touch to modern design. Just remember to use it where it shines best—headlines, logos, and short-form text—and pair it with something clean and structured to keep your designs balanced.

Before committing to a full brand system, always test the font in multiple contexts. Try it on mockups, print samples, and web previews. And don’t forget to explore the alternates and ligatures—those little flourishes can make a big difference in how your design feels.
